Yoga for Absolute Beginners: Virasana
Thunderbolt pose (virasana) can be particularly hard on the knees and ankles, so David shows you how you can sit comfortably using blankets and pillows, while still getting the most from the pose and maintaining the ability to move into other stretches. He also shows you how to make a bolster if you don't have one. This class is a part of a 'Yoga for Beginners' series.

Thank you, David. I struggle with Virasana because of my knee, and this helped me get into it pain free.
Excellent, thorough instructions, thank you David.
Hi Julie and Hiatt. Many people have trouble sitting on their heels, particularly if they haven't been stretching their ankles on a regular basis, or are an athlete or have injured them. So, if you have tried putting a lot of height under your bum and padded support under your ankles and it still doesn't help enough, I would recommend sitting cross-legged. Separately, you can work on gaining flexibility in your ankles by slowly moving in and out of this seated position, while relaxing those muscles. They can release, but it might take some time. In your case, Julie, you may not be able to regain your flexibility because of the added hardware.
My knees won't allow me to sit on them like you're doing it this video. And I broke my lower leg/ankle and have 13 screws and 2 plates at the ankle area of my left leg so my ankle won't bend like you have it. What can I do to be able to do yoga?
